Background

Development is the eternal theme of human society. However, as the latest United Nation’s Special Edition of the Sustainable Development Goals Progress Report shows,  half of the SDG targets are either moderately or severely off track, and more than 30% of the SDG targets have stalled or gone into reverse. The UN Secretary-General Guterres urges greater action from the world’s leaders, to turn the tide and kick-start a new drive for SDG achievement.

China has always been a responsible supporter and contributor to the 2030 Agenda. At the High-level Dialogue on Global Development on June 24, 2022, President Xi Jinping officially announced that China would hold the World Youth Development Forum and jointly initiate the Action Plan for Global Youth Development, in a campaign pool as much strength as possible for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Our world is currently home to 1.8 billion young people. Providing young people with the resources they need to fulfill their potential and engaging them in global development is key to a more just, equal and prosperous world. We should listen to young people, trust young people, and forge the greatest consensus in building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Youth contain vast potential and play a crucial role in advancing the 2030 Agenda. As the UN Secretary-General’s report on Our Common Agenda says, “now is the time to think for the long term, to deliver more for young people and succeeding generations and to be better prepared for the challenges ahead.”

Since the adoption of the World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond, national governments and the international community formulated and advocated a series of new policies and programs to support youth development. In September 2018, the United Nations launched its first-ever youth strategy Youth 2030, which has become a leading roadmap integrating youth development into global development.

In this context, the All-China Youth Federation (ACYF) initiates and hosts the World Youth Development Forum, in the hopes of creating a platform for dialogues among international organizations, governments, youth organizations, young leaders, and all sectors of society, in order to advocate for prioritizing youth development and to promote the joint implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Development Initiative.

The World Youth Development Forum will:

1. Share knowledge and best practice on youth development, in order to build consensus on setting youth development agenda as national and international priority.

2. Publicize the contribution of youth in achieving the 2030 Agenda, showcase youth innovations and initiatives in advancing the implementation of the SDGs, and co-launch an Action Plan for Global Youth Development.

3.Provide a mechanized platform for stakeholders to discuss youth issues and work together for youth development and global development, to build a global community sharing and pursuing the goal of peaceful development and common development.

On July 21, 2022, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the first World Youth Development Forum
