The United Nations in China and partners marked International Youth Day 2026 with a dialogue in Beijing bringing together young people, government representatives, civil society, academia, the private sector and development partners.

Held under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” the event explored how policies, partnerships and youth-led innovation can help young people realize their aspirations and contribute to sustainable development. It was organized by UNFPA, UNDP, ILO, UNHCR and WFP, together with the United Nations Theme Group on Youth.

Connecting Youth Aspirations with National Priorities

Discussions connected global perspectives on youth development with China’s national priorities, including implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan and preparations for the next medium- and long-term youth development plan. Participants examined issues shaping young people’s lives, including education, employment, digital inclusion and safety, health and well-being, rural development and climate change.

Prof. Shahbaz Khan, UN Resident Coordinator ad interim and UNESCO Representative, said: “The United Nations in China is committed to working with the Government, youth organizations and partners to expand opportunities for young people, strengthen their meaningful participation and ensure that their perspectives inform sustainable development.”

Ms. Liu Kai, Deputy Secretary-General of the All-China Youth Federation, added: "China attaches great importance to youth work. The Outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan, for the first time, includes a dedicated section to support youth development, creating favourable conditions for young people to grow, develop their talents, and make outstanding contributions."

From Planning to Action

Three panel discussions explored how to turn these priorities into action: by listening to young people and translating evidence into responsive policies; enabling youth-led ideas to grow into lasting solutions, including climate-smart and disability-inclusive innovations; and connecting young people in China with peers across developing countries through South-South cooperation and two-way exchange.

Ms. Nadia Rasheed, UNFPA Representative and Chair of the UN Theme Group on Youth, emphasized the common aspirations underpinning these discussions: “decent and secure work, health and peace of mind, a fair chance at the life they imagine, and a genuine say in shaping their future.”

Discussions also highlighted opportunities to connect young people in China with peers across developing countries. Mr. Lei Pili, Deputy Director-General of the Global Development Promotion Center of CIDCA, highlighted the critical role of international cooperation, including through youth-focused practical cooperation projects and the partnerships with the United Nations, in expanding opportunities for young people.
