Artificial Intelligence+ 丨 Gao Yongkai: Let rural children touch the light of AI

2026 Acceleration Week for Global Youth Development

Currently, the urban-rural digital literacy gap is particularly prominent in the field of artificial intelligence. The deep-seated dilemma is that traditional assistance approaches focus on equipment donation while neglecting three necessary conditions for sustainable services: trust in physical space, local adaptation of educational content, and long-term stable technical maintenance. As the lead for the "LightArk AI: Cloud-Edge Bookstore" program, young Chinese innovator Gao Yongkai seeks to use both code and a humanistic spirit to open a window to the wider world for children living in the "periphery" of the educational landscape - in small towns and rural areas.

The program team chose the "24-hour Bookstore" in Xiaobu Village, Huadu District, Guangzhou as a typical sample of an endogenous rural cultural space, launching the "AI Light Keeper" action. Drawing on the model compression and edge computing research results of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), the team deploys AI inference nodes on the existing office computers in the bookstore; the "Hongyan AI Companion" software is launched, providing free composition guidance, oral English training, and science Q&A; "AI + Local Aesthetic Education" workshops are designed to guide students in using AI tools to create works about local native scenery. The program adopts a "social enterprise + public welfare network" hybrid operation mechanism. During the pilot period, the bookstore AI corner accumulated more than 2,800 hours of service time, benefiting more than 3,500 villagers. The transformation in the children has convinced Gao Yongkai that he is on the right path. He believes that AI should be more than just a tool for efficiency or a showcase of raw computing power; true "tech for good" means breaking down resource barriers and bringing technology to the grassroots level.

While the tech industry chases ever-greater computing power and larger parameter counts, Gao Yongkai and his team offer a response that is both gentle and steadfast: beyond mere computational might, there exists another kind of romance in technology - ensuring that even children in the most remote places have a light to guide them.
